Calculation Basis

What is the basis for the calculations?

We disclose all the rules used by Saju-Link. You can check where the numbers displayed on the screen come from, including the adjustments for today's fortune, the scores from the earthly branch relationship table, and the boundary values that distinguish between a strong day pillar and a weak day pillar.

Saju writes down the year, month, day and hour of your birth as two Chinese characters each, eight characters in all. The upper character of each pair is called the heavenly stem, the lower one the earthly branch, and the two characters of your birth day are called the Day Pillar. If these words are new to you, start with Stems, Branches and Day Pillars — How to Read the Letters.

  • Heavenly stems — the ten upper characters of Saju. Each has a fixed element and polarity, and the stem of your birth day is the day stem that points to you.
  • Earthly branches — the twelve lower characters of Saju, the same characters as the zodiac animals. Each branch holds hidden stems inside it.
  • Day pillars — the pair made by the stem and branch of your birth day. There are 60 of them, from 甲子 to 癸亥, and each has its own entry. You will find them in the collapsed lists below.
